The Character!
Name: Severus Snape
Age: 38
Gender: (Male or Female) Male
Were you formely a Hogwarts Student, please state or name other institution: Yes Slytherin
Wand: 15" Ebony, Dragon Heartstring
Blood Status: Half blood
Character Appearance:
Describe Your Character: Snape was a thin man with sallow skin and a large, hooked nose. He had shoulder-length, greasy black hair which framed his face in curtains. His cold, black eyes resembled dark tunnels; their colour looked similar to Hagrid's, but contained none of the half-giant's warmth. He had a thin-lipped, sneering mouth, and often spoke in a soft voice, though he often became very aggressive with students he disliked. Like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the ability to keep students quiet without effort. He preferred to wear black, flowing robes, giving him an appearance sometimes likened to a bat.
Celeb Claim/Playby: (Make sure you post this in the Celeb Claim thread or you won't get to keep it!) Alan Rickman
Relationship Status: (Single, Promising, Involved, Complicated, Engaged, Divorced, Widowed, Married???) Single
Occupation: Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts
Personality: (at least a paragraph) Severus Snape is considered by most to be cynical and sarcastic. He has a tendency to hold grudges and could be extremely spiteful toward those whom he disliked. Though Severus' disdain for the Marauders can be understood in terms of the history they shared, he dislikes Gryffindor students in general, considering them to be arrogant and attention-seeking, with no regard for school rules (or in his own words, "brawny rather than brainy"). Snape frequently terrorises his least favourite pupils; he often directs snide comments and verbal abuse at them. He is not above hounding and bullying students and making a spectacle out of them in his classroom if he thought they deserved it. He also has a tendency to treat his students unfairly; he looks for excuses to punish students he personally disliked, but overlooks any rule-breaking done by students in his own House, such as Draco Malfoy. He often docks House points from Harry for trivial reasons.
As a professor, Severus is known for his cavalier attitude and low tolerance for cheek. Snape takes full advantage of his power, expecting complete respect from his students and, much like Filch, takes pleasure in doling out punishments to people he disliked. He seems to dislike most of his students, with the exception of those in Slytherin.
Severus' classes are notoriously rigorous. He holds his students to a high standard, therefore he refuses to take any student into his N.E.W.T.-level Potions classes except the select few who did receive a score of "Outstanding" on the O.W.L. exam. However, when he took over Defence Against the Dark Arts, he allowed students who had scored at least "Exceeds Expectations" on their O.W.L. to attend his N.E.W.T.-level classes, thus lowering his standards, though this may be due to the fact that the students that year had had many diferent teachers. He keeps his students working until the last minute and, leading up to holidays, refuses to let them relax and play games.
Severus is an intensely private man who views emotional display as a sign of weakness. As an Occlumens, he is adept at concealing his thoughts and feelings, which allowed him to maintain a cold, collected demeanour. Nonetheless, he is prone to temper tantrums, especially when it came to Harry Potter. Snape also becomes furious whenever he was accused of cowardice.
Severus also has a passion for Dark Arts and, in his youth, blood purity. However he made an exception for his close friend Lily Evans. He has been practising Dark Arts since his youth, and when returned to school as a professor, he continually applied for the job as the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher for his entire career there, leading him to hate any other teachers who managed to get the job before him and treat them with minimal respect. Dumbledore refused him the job for fear that it would bring out Snape's darker side once again, but relented after fifteen years. Severus also nicknamed himself "Half-Blood Prince", a tribute to his pure-blood mother, Eileen Prince whilst also admitting that Severus himself was not a pure blood because his father was a Muggle. His passion for Dark Arts and blood purity strained his relationship with his beloved Lily Evans, which led him to drop his notion of blood-based beliefs soon afterwards, but he maintained his love for the Dark Arts.
As the Half-Blood Prince, Severus has invented many spells and short-cuts for potion brewing. He remembers them all by the heart and was furious when someone took his ideas without his consent. He was especially furious when his creations were used against him, as the Marauders did.
Ultimately, it was Severus' past and his love for Lily Evans that defined his character and personality. After spending a large part of his youth giving Lily his unconditional love and attention, Severus accidentally called her a derogatory name, cutting off their friendship. He was then forced to watch her marry his arch rival and worst enemy, James Potter. Upon overhearing The Prophecy, he immediately informed his then-master Voldemort of its contents, not knowing it would lead to the murder of Lily and her husband. He later claimed that this was the biggest mistake he ever made. He was devastated by Lily's death and devoted the rest of his life to protecting her son Harry in her memory.
Despite his mean-spirited demeanour, Severus is an extremely courageous man and possessed tremendous strength of character. Everything he does is motivated by his devotion to the memory of Lily Evans. He was a brave and loyal ally to the Order of the Phoenix and in his role as a double agent took great personal risk in ensuring Harry's safety at the hands of Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore even remarked upon Severus' bravery, commenting that "sometimes I think we sort too soon." Severus also proved himself capable of putting aside, or at least suppressing, his grudges in extreme situations, such as when he attempted to save the life of Remus Lupin during the Battle Over Little Whinging and dutifully concocted the Wolfsbane Potion every month so that Remus could make his werewolf transformations safely.
Patronus: (Disabled for Children & Special Races) Doe
Boggart: (Biggest fear) Forgetting the memory of Lilly and breaking his promise to her.
Erised: (Biggest desire) To have saved and been with Lilly
Amortentia: (Smells that attract you; at least 3) Potions, Lilly's perfume, Lilly flowers.
Veritaserum: (Biggest secret(s)) His love for Lilly Potter
Family Members: (Names and relationship to character) Eileen Prince (mother), Tobias Snape (father)
Character History: At least 3-5 Paragraphs, a paragraph is 3-5 sentences) Snape was similar to Harry in that he didn't grow up in a happy, loving family. His parents appear to have had a dysfunctional, even abusive relationship, which was probably why they were so emotionally absent in his life. It is unknown what happened to his parents, as he was seen living in their empty house in 1995. This troubled childhood is strongly suggested to have accounted for his severe demeanour, bitterness, and bouts of rage, as seen now in his later life.
What you are looking for in the future with this charrie: He wants to continue working in the job he has desired for such a long time. Protecting Harry secretly of course and remain cold to those around him.
Sample Roleplay: (At least 2 paragraphs, a paragraph is 3-5 sentences) blah
